Chip & crack repair

Small break.
Smart timing.

Some windshield damage can be stabilized with a precise resin repair. Acting quickly may make the difference.

What repair can do

Keep eligible damage from becoming a larger problem.

Windshield repair typically uses a clear resin placed into a break to help stabilize the glass. The goal is to restore structural continuity and reduce the visibility of the damage, while helping prevent further spread.

  • Fresh, clean damage is generally easier to evaluate for repair.
  • Location matters, especially near the edge or in the driver’s main view.
  • Damage that is deep, long, complex, or contaminated may not be repairable.
  • Even a successful repair may remain visible at some angles.

A practical check

Is my chip eligible?

No web page can make the final call. A real assessment looks at the damage and how your vehicle uses the glass.

Position

Where is it?

Damage at a windshield edge or directly in the driver’s primary viewing zone can change the recommended approach.

Pattern

What shape is it?

A small, contained chip is different from a long, branching crack or a break with multiple impact points.

Condition

What has entered it?

Dirt, moisture, and time can affect a repair. A simple piece of clear tape over a fresh chip may help keep contamination out until it can be inspected.

Care before service

Protect the damage — and your view.

Temperature change and vibration can cause an existing chip or crack to spread. Avoid blasting hot or cold air directly at the damaged spot, do not aggressively wash the glass, and be mindful of slamming doors.

Ask about your chip ↗
For a new chip, lightly cover the outside surface with clear tape if the glass is dry and clean. This is not a repair — it simply helps keep debris out until a technician can evaluate it.

When repair is not the right answer

If the damage is obstructive, unstable, extensive, at the edge, or otherwise unsuitable for a safe result, replacement may be the better path. Automotive Glass Carranza will explain why.
